ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Sarah Kessans and Emily Kohl rowed together as teammates on the award winning Purdue University Rowing team where they developed a strong passion for their sport. After college, they became the youngest American women in the 2005 Woodvale Events Atlantic Rowing Race, a 26 team race across 3,000 miles of the Atlantic Ocean in 24' long ocean rowing boats. After 46 days and 1400 miles, the pair got caught in a storm and their boat capsized, leaving them stranded in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.  With only an emergency beacon and their own resources, they waited for 16 hours in turbulent waters before being rescued by a British ship.  They lived to tell their tale, and now plan on racing again in the 2009 race. 

In addition to training, fundraising, and speaking, Sarah is pursuing her PhD at Arizona State University in molecular biology and coaching the novice women's rowing team.  Emily is an academic counselor for the University of Phoenix and is pursuing a master's degree in clinical psychology in addition to coaching the varsity women's rowing team at ASU.
