SRP delivered a record amount of energy to customers on Friday, July 24, keeping customers in power on the hottest day of the year so far. Based on preliminary information, SRP delivered an all-time high peak load of 9,072 megawatts (MW) between 5 and 6 p.m.
This surpasses the previous record peak of 8,542 MW set on August 7, 2025.
The company also exceeded the 2025 record multiple times on Thursday, July 23 and Saturday, July 25.
One megawatt is enough energy to power approximately 225 homes.
The multi-day increase in energy demand is attributed to several factors, including extreme temperatures and continued customer growth. The high temperature recorded on July 24 was 117 degrees and the overnight low reached 97 degrees.
“Teams across SRP conduct extensive planning and work year-round to ensure we provide reliable service, especially during long stretches of extreme daytime and nighttime heat,” said Pam Syrjala, SRP Senior Director of Supply and Trading. “We call on a diverse mix of generating resources, including natural gas, solar and battery energy storage, to serve customers around the clock.”
Since last summer, SRP has brought several new energy resources online, including Copper Crossing PV Solar Project, Flatland Energy Storage, Pediment Battery Energy Storage System and the Coolidge Expansion Project. Together, these resources added nearly 800 MW to the grid.
